Through the Social Forestry scheme, the Indonesian Government has developed a program model to improve welfare while preserving forests. Presidential Regulation (Perpres) No. 28 of 2023 regulates the acceleration of social forestry management which is a collaboration between ministries/institutions, provincial, district/city governments, and related parties in accelerating the achievement of social forestry management targets which are implemented holistically, integrative, thematically, and spatially.

The Bulungan Regency Government in North Kalimantan Province welcomed this model. This model is applied to the Kayan Landscape area, which covers 4 sub-districts with 18 villages with an area of 568,182 hectares, stretching from Antutan Village to Long Peleban Village in the Upper Kayan River. Through the Integrated Area Development (IAD) mechanism, this approach model integrates social, economic, ecological, socio-economic integration, and economic-ecological aspects with a social forestry basis.

Yayasan Konservasi Alam Nusantara (YKAN) has collaborated with the Bulungan Regency government since 2020. Supporting this IAD initiative, YKAN has assisted 18 villages around the Kayan Landscape. In this process, YKAN collaborated with strategic partners, which are Yayasan Pioner, Yayasan Institute for Research and Empowerment (IRE), Yayasan Kalimajari, Perkumpulan Peduli Lingkungan (Perdu), dan Perkumpulan Lingkar Hutan Lestari (PLHL).
Currently, YKAN and partners are preparing a nursery for endemic plant seedlings, as well as conducting a Free Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) process for all residents in Long Buang Village. The plan is for the land to be planted with 400 endemic plants consisting of 120 wood trees and 280 fruit trees. It is hoped that the residents will prepare the tree seedlings. It is planned that the selected fruit plants, namely jackfruit, langsat fruit, durian, and elai (Kalimantan durian), can become an alternative income for the community. This activity supports community involvement in achieving social forestry targets in Bulungan Regency.
