Natural Climate Solution (NCS)
Countries worldwide declared their commitments to mitigate climate change
by keeping the average increase of the global temperature below 2 degrees Celsius under the Paris Agreement 2015. One innovative approach to achieving that target is Natural Climate Solutions (NCS).
Natural Climate Solutions comprise a range of mitigation efforts focused on preserving natural resources. These efforts involve safeguarding forests and wetlands, enhancing forest management, and restoring ecosystems such as forests, peatlands, and mangroves.
NCS initiatives in Indonesia encompass six strategies: reforestation, rewetting degraded peatlands, preventing peatland damage, restoring mangroves, preventing mangrove damage, and implementing sustainable forest management.
According to a study in April 2021 by the Nusantara Nature Conservation Foundation (YKAN) and Indonesia's Ministry of Environment and Forestry, NCS can potentially reduce the country's emissions by 1.4 GtCO2e/year. The potential emission reductions break down as follows: 3% from the mangrove ecosystem, 30% from the forestry sectors, and 67% from the peatlands.
